The best in June Lake

Why everyone loves to stay at the Heidelberg Inn  The lobby was something you would see in a movie. It had a huge stone fireplace with a full size stuffed bear and a dear head. The fire place was big enough that you could walk through it. Also, the walls of the lounge area were decorated with black & white photographs of movie stars from the 30's - 50's who were regulars at this classy place.

NEARBY AREA ATTRACTIONS

Ansel Adams Wilderness
Mammoth Ranger Station, Inyo National Forest
Mammoth Lakes, California 93546

The Ansel Adams Wilderness was established in 1964 as a part of the original Wilderness Act, and was originally named the "Minarets Wilderness." After the death of the famous photographer in 1984, the wilderness area was expanded and re-named. The Ansel Adams Wilderness encompasses 231,066 acres, including most of the famous John Muir Trail.

Some of the important points of interest in the Ansel Adams Wilderness are the Ritter Range including Mt. Ritter and Banner Peak, visible from the June Lake Junction area. Thousand Island Lake (shown in photo) is accessible via the Rush Creek Trailhead, which intersects the John Muir and Pacific Crest Trail near upper Rush Meadows.  A few of the many other hiking destinations convenient to the June Lake Loop by trail are Parker Lake, the Mono Pass area (above Bloody Canyon), Fern Lake, Clark Lakes, Gem Lake and Alger Lakes.

Yosemite National Park
Public Information Office

Yosemite, CA 95389

The June Lake Loop is one of Yosemite National Park's nearest gateway communities. When traveling northward, U.S. 395 North merges with State Route 120 West at the North Junction of the June Lake Loop. Highway 120 proceeds over Tioga Pass, the highest elevation highway pass in the Sierra Nevada, at 9,941 feet. The gate to Yosemite National Park is at the top of the pass, about 25 miles from June Lake Village. Due to the extremes of these high mountains, Tioga Pass is typically open from late May through about November each year, and is closed during the winter.

Yosemite Valley is of course renowned over the world for its sheer canyon walls, monolithic granite domes and peaks, and fantastic waterfalls. The scenic values of June Lake Loop, lying just east of Yosemite Valley, while much different, can be almost equally dramatic, and the trip over the mountains between the two locations is incredible. June Lake can be a great complement to your Yosemite vacation, or visa versa.

Mono Lake, an ancient, inland salty sea filled with history, beauty and mystery, is approximately 10 miles north of June Lake.  Its salt waters sustain a unique biosphere where tiny brine shrimp feed millions of migrating birds each year. Mono Lake has two volcanic islands; strange formations called Tufas, and unusual shorelines.

Enjoy the spectacular tufa towers through a self-guided walking tour on the shoreline at the Seal Beach side of the lake. These unusual towers are piled-up mineral deposits formed beneath the water's surface when mineral-rich spring water mixes with salt lake water.

The California State Park, US Forest Service and the Mono Lake Committee offer guided walks, kayak and canoe tours, a museum and a visitor center to stimulate interest and provide information.

Tioga Pass and Lee Vining Canyon
Tioga Pass Road
Mono County, CA

Tioga Pass, at an elevation of 9,945 ft, is Yosemite's Heavenly gate.  Get a sky-high peak into America's park jewel from California's highest vehicle pass.  Near the summit Ellery, Saddlebag, and Tioga Lake offer accessible camping and fishing in an astonishing alpine setting.  Lee Vining Creek, cascading down the canyon is lined with acres of tall aspens that put on a blazing show of fall color.  Lee Vining Canyon is one of the most scenic bike rides in the Eastern Sierra; a challenging climb through a glacial canyon.  Watch for that occasional Bighorn Sheep on the Canyon's Rocky slopes.

Here you'll see what's left of Bodie. An original ghost town from the late 1800's. Bodie stands today in a state of "arrested decay". So coined by the State of California when they took over the town in 1962 to make it a State Historic Park.

Long Valley and Crowley Lake
Mono South, CA

Long Valley Caldera situated at the boundary between the Sierra Nevada and the Basin and Range Province in eastern California, is among the largest quaternary rhyolitic volcanic centers in North America. The elliptical caldera is about 10 by 20 miles in size.  Magma still underlies the caldera and heats underground water. The heated water feeds local hot springs and fumaroles and powers local geothermal power plants producing a combined 40 megawatts of electricity.

South of the Caldera is Crowley Lake, to the west is the Eastern High Sierra, further north is the Mono Basin with Mono Lake and Mono Craters, to the east the Glass Mountain Range. The Long Valley Caldera and the surrounding area host numerous outdoor recreational activities, including mountaineering, climbing, hiking, fishing, horseback-riding, biking, mountain biking, and swimming mostly in the summer, and skiing, cross-country skiing, snow-shoeing, and snow-mobiling in the winter.
